Professor Stein's research and teaching interests include the origins of international conflict, the domestic sources of international behavior, public opinion about foreign policy, and the role of culture and norms in political processes. Her current research project explores beliefs about retribution as a source of individuals' attitudes towards war, and investigates the effect of cross-national variation in retributiveness on the use of military force by democracies.
