David Laitin studies comparative politics, with a specialty in the field of political culture. He has studied political issues involving language use, religion, the formation of national identities, and the sources of intra- and inter-ethnic violent conflict. He combines formal and statistical methods with ethnographic field work, which he has undertaken in Somalia, Nigeria, Catalonia and the Russian-speaking zones of the former Soviet Union.
