The Global Studies Department at St. Lawrence University invites applications for one-year, visiting assistant professor position to begin in August 2018, with the possibility of a second year subject to budgetary approval. We are specifically interested in candidates who take critical, interdisciplinary, comparative, and global/transnational approaches to their thematic areas of research, specifically in the African and/or the African Diaspora context. Research specialization is open, though fields of particular interest to us include the following: mobility, migration and transnational studies; diaspora and transatlantic studies; urban studies; development; population and public health; and political economic and postcolonial approaches to globalization. This interdisciplinary position requires the successful candidate to have a Ph.D. in-hand at the time of the appointment.
Global Studies is an interdisciplinary program drawing its depth from area studies and its theory and methods from political economy and cultural studies. The major includes five core courses: introductory courses in global political economy and race/culture/identity; research methods; and theory courses in global political economy and cultural studies. The successful candidate will be expected to teach three of these courses as well as elective courses related to their areas of research interest – including at least one course that is dual-listed with the African Studies program.
We seek candidates with demonstrated effective teaching practices that embody liberal arts pedagogical philosophies, an active and productive research agenda, and a commitment to mentoring undergraduate students and supervising one-on-one independent senior research projects. We are especially interested in candidates who will strengthen the department’s commitments to social justice, diverse communities of people and perspectives, and meaningful communication through social, cultural, and linguistic scholarship and practice.
Interested applicants must apply online at http://employment.stlawu.edu uploading all required materials which are defined in the "special instructions to applicant" section. All offers of employment are contingent upon the finalist successfully passing a background (including criminal records) check.
